Here are a few reports and thoughts from this weekend’s long track speed skating World Cup, being held in Hamar, Norway;
On the first day of the World Cup in Hamar Lucas not only skated his fastest 1500m ever, but with this time he also managed to claim the silver medal in this distance! Skating in the 7th pair against Remco Olde Heuvel, Lucas needed 1:45.40 to complete his race, which was a great improvement of his old personal best (1:45.63). The only skater faster was 1500m gold-medalist in Berlin and Heerenveen, Shani Davis (1:44.27). Today’s silver medal represents Lucas’ first individual World Cup medal.
today i race the 1500m, 1M49etc….not so good. i could n t skate normally cause i have a little pain in my back and i couldn t find what it was. my straight line was terrible, i couldn t put my hips over my skate…i was super stiff.
in the evening i could see a phisio that helped me super nicely for this. he find out that my right hip was blocked and that my left hip was rotating the wrong direction when i bend in front…
Canada’s Jeremy Wotherspoon won both the 500-meter (34.70) and 1000-meter races on day 1. Jamie Gregg came back to win the 500-meters on day 2 with a time of 34.53.
USA’s Harry Vogel placed 5th in the 1000-meters, with a time of 1.10,91.

This year the Can Am and the Junior World Cup are 2-in-1. The US, Romania, and Canada are racing in the world cup. There were skaters who qualified from last year and are doing great! Lots of PBs were broken today overall. You can tell also, cause the ice had the air sucked out of it. If you see little bubble holes, then you know you gotta get yer legs movin or you might not get as big of a PB, but you’ll still get a PB…Hopefully.
Eisschnellläuferin Claudia pitch stone continues to hang after a further setback in the fight for the continuation of its successful career in air. The international sport Court of Justice CAS rejected an express request of pitch stone for a short term starting permission for the Worldcup on Friday on weekend in the Norwegian Hamar, showed in its reason however like already with the Ablehung of a first express request two weeks ago ago no tendency on a possible negative saying in the pronouncement of judgment on coming Wednesday.
In Calgary today in the Can Am competition 27 years old Brazilian Felipe de Souza, coming from/active in shorttrack, will participate as the first Brazilian long-track icespeedskater. Welcome to the family!
There has been some complaints about Norway’s long track speed skating coach Peter Mueller. According to some sources, those involved, including Mueller and the athlete, solved the problem, but it’s now a governing body/ federation issue; read (and view) more using the following links;
This behaviour of Mueller is unacceptable! I am glad that Maren reported it to the NSF but that also indicaties that it was really bad..
Saw in another article that the relation between the Haugli’s and Mueller is far from good and that according to Sverre Haugli there is almost no conversation between them. Further he says that he and Maren try as much as they can to create a good relation but that it doesn’t work. They will have a meeting with NSF today I saw. I hope that that will help a bit. It’s a shame that the situation is like this now.
Mr. Lahey said Mr. Godbout needed to learn he had to slow down to win races.
“Describing who he is was helpful.”
That self-awareness has also helped the skater attract sponsors by pointing out the need to temper his assertiveness and become more collegial, said Mr. Lahey.
“It’s helped on and off the ice.”
Mr. Godbout’s training times have dropped by eight to 10 per cent since he began working with Mr. Lahey in March.
“That’s substantial. He’s gone from no chance to a 70 per cent chance of making the team,” said Mr. Lahey.
Mr. Godbout gave the management consultant the ultimate sporting compliment.
What a dramatic final! The height of the season in the Carribean! An emotional and thrilling World Cup 2009 had come to its end on the Isla Margarita and with this a unique worldwide inline series, the WORLD INLINE CUP!
In a hot showdown the Colombian superstar Diego Rosero (Rollerblade World) beat the – up to the last race – leading French Yann Guyader and thus won the palm of the overall winner. He drove the race of this live, demonstrating how strong he is.
The overall victory of his girl-friend Cecilia Baena couldn’t certainly comfort him for being only second. But the Colombian sprinter called “Checky” (Powerslide Matter World) was the outstanding female skater of the whole season, unbeatable in the end.
Experts are predicting a huge medal haul for Canada at the 2010 Vancouver Games, and the pressure is on our athletes to make the host country look good. Although the Canadian team won’t be finalized until a few weeks before the competition begins, here is a glimpse at 50 athletes we think have podium potential.
I did my first Silver Strand this year… loved it and will be back! I doubt any of the promoters of the event will read posts here, it’s mostly a running event, so I plan to email them a couple tips. Anyhow, this race was great but could be much better with just a couple very small easy changes.
Thus, for critiques of the race, the local club, SDSE, has established a communication protocol that we would love people to follow. The liasons can put together everyone’s comments and present it in a not-so-overwhelming manner. They have said, though, that all positive feedback can go directly to Koz – it’ll look good.
For your critiques of the Silver Strand race, please direct them to either Linus Harth at linus@linusharth.com or Michael Leventhal at textscience@gmail.com.

The second meet of the season was again in Thialf Heerenveen. The speedskating mekka of the world. I can’t even count the times I’ve been to Thialf, so I was not as excited as last weekend. But nevertheless, I looked forward to a new speedskating event.
Rain was gushing down on the Netherlands, causing massive traffic jams, making me arrive 2 hours late to Thialf. The people of the security gave me a hard time, by instecting my bag, having me unfold my flag to check for sicsors and inspecting my camera. Apperently, there is a new rule in Thialf, that no ‘proffesional’ camera’s can be brought inside. As if I can compete with the real photographers…
La société BJ Concept récemment créée par Joël Bahirenne travaille actuellement sur un nouveau concept de platines de roller de vitesse sur mesure. Elles ont déjà été testées par plusieurs patineurs élites (voir la vidéo).
Here’s a video, from last weekend’s long track speed skating World Cup, of Marianne Timmer’s fall in which she broke her ankle; Dramatische valpartij Timmer.
A few long track speed skaters have been hit by the flu bug, including Sven Kramer, Carl Verheijen, Erben Wennemars.
According to the article Sven Kramer weer hersteld, Sven Kramer has recovered an will be competing in this weekend’s long track speed skating World Cup in Norway.
The border of the reasonable one is reached. I did not dope. And although there is no proof for the enormous accusation of the ISU, I wait now already nearly four weeks for the judgement of the CAS. Me the whole is completely unexplainable. I made now for a long time enough good expression the bad play. I am it suffering to always act like the strong woman. I feel it as shamefully as I am treated. Meanwhile I do not become the feeling loosely that it does not concern here to no more me. Completely honestly: It is completely no matter to me, as the judges will justify their judgement and whether it possibly leaves area for speculations. I want to simply only know, that I am. With such an approach the CAS makes nevertheless only clear that it paragraph, statutes, which is more important indirect proof and the possible medium echo than a human fate. That can not accept and does not want I. I am the accused one of. I am that, those the whole Hetzerei, the meeting with hostility, reviling and the character assassination over itself to be issued leave must. And I am simple it suffering to have to bear all this. I want to simply only know whether the three Mr. regard me actual after the hearing in Lausanne as a Doperin or not? I want to know, whether it is really possible to pull me from traffic on the basis only one Blutparamaters? There is not one proof for my debt. But several other Paramater in my blood, which speak clearly against Doping. For me is that all no longer comprehensibly. Each hour, each minute circle my thoughts around what did the ISU to me. I do not know at all, as it to be possible is to run under these circumstances running. From there it I decided not to rise tomorrow into the flier after Hamar if I do not have an acquittal in the bag. It would not be for me to borne, in the context of the Worldcup, besieges from journalists receiving on Friday the message of a verdict of guilty. Because meanwhile I place myself more than ever the question whether I will actually get a sport-legal or a not much more a sport-political judgement. The two-week shift and that intolerablly long control rooms on the judgement raise many questions with me at present. And with these questions in the back of the head I do not see flying itself in the situation to Hamar.
