March 6th 2011- Pictures- Rosario, Argentina

So far in Argentina;

  • While eating dinner tonight, we were eaten alive by mosquitoes. The food was amazing, but we won’t remember it because of the mosquitoes.
  • Martine and Morgane (and I) still don’t have our suitcases. Uhh, this is not good.
  • We explored Rosario some more today.
  • There are lots of stray/ wild dogs- we call them Perros. They like us. We also like them.
  • Racing starts tomorrow- check PatinCarrera’s page for updates and results.

Here’s are more pictures from the Pan American Championships in Rosario, Argentina;

March 5th 2011- Pictures- Rosario, Argentina

Here are pictures from the last couple of days here in Rosario, Argentina.

  • Wayne B. is now here.
  • Morgane’s & Martine’s suitcases are still not here. I’m missing a bunch of sets of wheels, all my bearings, eek!
  • It’s still hot!
  • We skated on the track earlier today. It’s pretty nice.
  • The power was out from about 11am to 9:30pm.

March 4th 2011- To the track in Rosario

Earlier today, we skated to the track to see what’s what.

Here’s a video I’m sharing with my students. The School Board I work for granted me an unpaid leave of absence to attend this competition. The plan is for me to share some of the experiences from Argentina with the students I teach.

Rosario’s a pretty dense city. We haven’t quite figured out what the rules are for traffic at intersections, who has priority and who doesn’t that is.

The good news is there’s a supermarket near the hotel, plus the hotel’s restaurant offers good food at a decent price.

  • Martine Charbonneau arrived earlier this morning.
  • Our hotel’s complimentary breakfast is excellent.
  • Wayne is still MIA, probably somewhere in Buenos Aires.
  • It’s incredibly hot here. I’m dying. I think we’ll be coming back well tanned.
  • Morgane bought deodorant and is still stuck wearing my clothes. They look baggy on her. Her suitcases (with some of my stuff in it) is still MIA.
  • We’re planning on skating a program on the track later this afternoon/ evening.

When we arrived at the track, Chile’s squad was finishing up, Venezuela’s team was leaving the track, and the Brazil’s skaters were also headed off

March 4th 2011- Short Track Speed Skating News

Here’s a little wee bit of short track speed skating online content;

Well, for all of us, skating is just a hobby. It’s those who decide that they want to take it from just a hobby to the next level that need to make the commitment to training. Being an elite level athlete is so much more than training hard, it’s a dedication. It’s changing your life so that one can be the best and “shoot the rest.” I’ve trained with the best coaches in the world, and we go above and beyond what every other country in the world is doing, so that we can be the best. A lot of individuals think that this is just another “game.” This sport is absolutely cutthroat. What sport is harder than this? [source]

Physically you must do the appropriate training for the specific distance you are time trialing in. Then you need to test your physical preparation in simulation time trials to find out if your training has taken you within range of your target time. Then the question is: “How can I make it even better?” Often the answer lies in the mental preparation and execution. This starts with having a time trial plan or race plan. [source]

March 3rd 2011- In Rosario

We’ve arrived in Rosario, Argentina.

  • Wayne is stuck in Buenos Aires after his flight from New Zealand was delayed
  • Morgane’s suitcases, which have a bunch of my stuff in them, have been swallowed up by the abyss of the airline industry
  • Our hotel, Hotel Urquiza, is very nice. It’s got decent wifi, a roof-top pool, and more
  • I’m rooming with Jade Pauley, Steve Robillard; good times
  • It’s warm here! Jade’s wearing a t-shirt, Morgane is wearing my shorts

We were offered incredible views as we were flew over the Andes from Santiago, Chile, to Buenos Aires, Argentina

March 2nd 2011- At Airport, Ready to fly to Rosario, Argentina for Pan American Championships

Jade Pauley, Morgane Echardour, and I are currently hanging out at the airport in Mississauga (Toronto). We’re ready for flying overnight. We’ll eventually end up in Rosario, Argentina.

On the plane… off to Argentina!!

The reason we’re headed there is to represent Canada at the Pan American Championships. The event serves as the qualifying competition for nations for the 2011 Pan American Games, which will be held in October in Mexico.

Completing the team are Steve Robillard & Martine Charbonneau, plus the support of Mike Murray as coach and Wayne Burrett as manager.

Here are PatinCarrera’s articles

So the USA is sending Joey Mantia, Will Bowen, and Harry Vogel?? Woa, that’s some pretty darn strong mojo!

From what I’ve read in the official event documents, the top 10 nations from these championships will qualify for a spot in the Games. With USA, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile, plus fast skaters from Ecuador, Guatemala, and El Salvador, as well as tough racers from Cuba and a few other skaters of decent caliber, I expect the racing will be intense.

I’m not sure if, or how much I’ll be updating SSW while I’m down there.

See you on the flip side!

Again, heart rate as an indicator of recovery for sprint training is virtually useless – at least in terms of when an athlete is ready for the next repeat. The only important element here is time, and not heart rate. The heart rate will decrease with more time, but the time element has more to do with re-stocking ATP in the muscles. Re-filling the ATP stores is like filling up a tapered-neck bottle with liquid. It fills up very, very quickly as it nears completion. ATP will be about 90% re-stored in about 2 minutes. 100% re-stored in 3 minutes. The only benefit of waiting longer than 3 minutes is to give the body more time to remove lactic acid. However, as mentioned previously, the heart rate will remain high during this process, and may take up to an hour or more before it actually returns to resting.

March 1st 2011- Roller & Inline Speed Skating- Part 3 Of 4

This is the third of four roller & inline speed skating related updates that I’m sharing hopefully by the end of the day.

REPORTS & RESULTS

Another skater who I think had a really good meet and has a lot of good things coming his way is Kevin Carroll. First off, Kevin Carroll shocked everybody the first night of NSC when he got 2nd in the flying 100-meter time trial with a time of 8.73. Kevin has hit a major growth spurt over the past year or so, and I think he is finally learning how to skate in that big body of his. Most of us know that his brother is a really good skater, and I think that Kevin will be following right along in his footsteps. Look for Kevin to vie for a spot on the Junior World Team this year at Outdoor Nationals.

Since there is so much to write about from this past weekend, I’m going to separate this post and make the first one about NSC and the second about the actual meet. This was not only the first time NSC was held in a city other than the owner’s (Miguel Jose) hometown, but also the first time NSC was held over two nights. The first night lived up to the hype and boasted some great racing and great crowds. At the beginning of the night, the house was packed and the skaters were ready to give the east coast crowd a show they would remember.

Treat yourself to one of the best vacations you’ll ever have. Skate, hike, eat, bike, and get massaged straight to nirvana on an amazing, everything-included vacation to the Khlong Tom Lai Resort in Thailand’s wildly beautiful Kamphaeng Phet province. Group skates, bikes, and waterfall hikes are led by inline legend Eddy Matzger, while Thai host Jai Wintachai and her staff will pamper you with relaxing massage, succulent cuisine, and warm hospitality.

What really striked me about Prince is that he shares the passion we all have about skating. His desire to learn and improve, as well as his drive to spread our sport among his fellow countrymen, is definitely remarkable. All that enthusiasm paid its dividends: in a couple of years, Nigeria’s skating grew exponentially, from a bunch of lone athletes to a dozen formal clubs. As you might expect though, they are lacking in terms of equipments and facilities… So that’s how we can help them: should you have equipment in excess or used, please send it to Prince. You can contact him via e-mail here >>

The other critical detail that writers fail to clarify is whether or not their words are based on fact or opinion. Opinions are vital for the process of critical thought, and it is this very process that leads to evolution and higher understanding.
