Malone, 26, will spend most of this month rehabilitating his knee, then will need about six more weeks before being allowed to return to the ice. Malone will require another five months before doctors clear him to begin skating at full speed.

April 11th 2010- World Inline Cup (Rennes)- Live Video On Now- New Zealand’s Scott Arlidge Wins

Click here for live coverage of the World Inline Cup, currently under way in Rennes. The race is being broadcast live on television & on the internet.

With only a few kilometers remaining in the race, a trio of skaters, including France’s Ewen Fernandez, New Zealand’s Scott Arlidge, and Switzerland’s Severin Widmer have snapped the leading breakaway of 6 skaters in half, down to 3 skaters.

Update: With two skaters from Powerslide in the leading breakaway, New Zealand’s Scott Arlidge took the win ahead of teammate Ewen Fernandez.

February 21st 2010- Olympics- Long Track Speed Skating- Women’s 1500-Meters- Netherlands’ Ireen Wust Wins Gold!

4:32pm- The final pair featured USA’s Jennifer Rodriguez & Canada’s gold medalist in the 1000-meter Christine Nesbitt. Both were off the pace, which gives the Gold medal to the Netherlands’ Ireen Wust! Click here for results.

4:29pm- Canada’s Kristina Groves started very strong and well ahead of the pace, and she held on, punching through most of the race, but fading in the last 200-meters, coming in with a time of 1:57.14, good for second place.

This guarantees the Netherlands and Canada a medal each, with one final pair remaining because Wust is leading, and there’s a Canadian in the final pair.

4:24pm- Czech Republic’s Martina Sablikova is now sitting in second place, more than one second behind the current leader’s time.

4:20pm- The Netherlands’ Ireen Wust just set a great time of 1:56.89. This equals Christine Nesbitt’s track record which was set in the fall.

The challenge is now on for the three remaining pairs. There is a Canadian skater racing in each three remainin pairs.

4:16pm- With four pairs to skate, the Netherlands’ Margot Boer shaved .10-seconds off the lead time with her time of 1:58.10.

Boer, who’s a tall skater, was able to skate a very strong final inner, this partly because of her background in short track speed skating.

4:13pm- Japan’s Nao Kodairo just skated a 1:58.20, which makes her the newest leader. The Netherlands’Annette Gerritsen is now bumped to 2nd place.

Kodairo increased her leg speed coming down the final straightaway, which is what skaters want to do on grippy ice such as that in Richmond.

4:09pm- Russia’s Yekaterina Shikhova’s time is  now the second fastest of the competition- 1:58.54. Her pair was Canada’s Cindy Klassen.

4:04pm- Germany’s Anna Friesinger-Postma’s time is good enough for 2nd place right now. She was World Champion last year in this distance.

3:58pm- The second group’s first pair is on the line, ready to start.

3:38pm PST- Jilleanna Rookard, who started ice speed skating in 2006 after competing in roller speed skating for numerous years, skated a 2:03.02. Rookard, who was wearing her pink Bont skates, made the USA team, and unfortunately, 18-days later, her mother passed away.

The ice is now being resurfaced.

3:33pm- The Netherlands’ Annette Gerritsen, who won the Silver medal in the 1000-meter race, set the Richmond oval record in this distance with a time of 1:58.46. The old mark was of 1:58.66. She now has the time to beat.

3:28pm- Russia’s Yekaterina Obysheva is the new leader, stumbling through the line hardly able to control her wobbly legs her time; 1:59.52.

3:21pm- Norway’s 18-year old Hege Bokko’s time still stands as the time to beat. Her time in the 1000-meter stood until after the second half of the race.

3:18pm- USA’s Heather Richardson nearly took the top time, a mere .04-seconds from Bokko’s time.

3:08pm PST- The women’s Olympic 1500-meter long track speed skating race is now under way. Through two pairs, the early leader is Norway’s Hege Bokko.

Andrew Love- Some Days… Superheros

Andrew Love’s latest entry is Some days…;

It’s a blowtorch of love, of appreciation. You don’t have to be an Olympic caliber skater to feel it.

On an unrelated note, I always wonder if people remember, or even know about, 2006′s infamous battle between the elusive, mysterious, cool, and handsome Señior Loco, and the terribly annoying and bad at wrestling Mystico, in Korea at the World Roller Speed Skating Championships;

My Pictures- Taz Roller Cup #1- Montreal

Here are my pictures from Saturday’s Taz Roller Cup #1. This was the first ever competition held at the Taz, Montreal’s 200-meter indoor track.

Jade Pauley won all three distances, including the 300-meters sprint, 10km pack race, and 500-meter.

Leo Frusteri (4th place standing up) has his skates rip apart during the 10km race- you can see me looking back at Leo after hearing a very long screeching sound. He managed to not fall.

Reports- Long Track Speed Skating World Cup #3- Hamar, Norway

Here are a few reports and thoughts from this weekend’s long track speed skating World Cup, being held in Hamar, Norway;

2009-11-21-LML

On the first day of the World Cup in Hamar Lucas not only skated his fastest 1500m ever, but with this time he also managed to claim the silver medal in this distance! Skating in the 7th pair against Remco Olde Heuvel, Lucas needed 1:45.40 to complete his race, which was a great improvement of his old personal best (1:45.63). The only skater faster was 1500m gold-medalist in Berlin and Heerenveen, Shani Davis (1:44.27). Today’s silver medal represents Lucas’ first individual World Cup medal.

today i race the 1500m, 1M49etc….not so good. i could n t skate normally cause i have a little pain in my back and i couldn t find what it was. my straight line was terrible, i couldn t put my hips over my skate…i was super stiff.

in the evening i could see a phisio that helped me super nicely for this. he find out that my right hip was blocked and that my left hip was rotating the wrong direction when i bend in front…

SSW Undergoing A Few Changes

I’m changing a few things around with SSW. The changes will allow me to be more flexible with SSW’s look, design, and content. This includes having the ability to place ads so that SSW can begin to pay for itself.

I’m planning on adding a SSW forum/ message board/ discussion board. Because SSW has significant readership, I think a move in the right direction is to give the opportunity for those who want to share content to do so.

In the meantime, you can find SSW archived at http://peterdoucet.wordpress.com/ and of course on the cleverly named section Spotlight & Archives.

I’ll try to be quick to get SSW back up online with a fully updated, stable, and operational look. This may take more time than I like because of the following;

  • It’s Friday and the weather is beautiful, which means I may go chill on a terrace somewhere.
  • I have to train lots & hard tonight & tomorrow.
  • It’s Friday, which means I want to watch a movie.
  • After training tomorrow, I am driving to Ottawa to compete in the Ottawa Inline Skating Festival on Sunday.
  • On Monday after coming back from Ottawa, I may check out the Canadian National Exhibition, which means I won’t work much on SSW.
  • Next week, I’m back in the classroom with my students. I will invest time early to ensure success for my teaching for the 2009-2010 school year. Again, this means I probably won’t spend much time working on the site.
  • When I glace at the calendar, it looks like there are races every weekend for the upcoming 5 or 6 weekends. With training, travel, and of course competing, I’ll limit the ammount of time that I sit down to work on SSW.
