Through Winter of Discontent, Eva tells both her story and the story of US Speedskating. And it’s not always a nice story. But I think it’s an important one for people to hear which is why I want to make people aware of it. Whether you have an interest in sport in general or speedskating in specific, this book may make you aware of some of the things that really go on in high-level sport that you won’t hear about otherwise.
I’ll be blunt: if you’re the kind of person who needs their sports books to be full of happy endings and Rocky-esque moments, this is not the book for you to read. If you want a true insider’s view of high- level sport in what is admittedly a niche sport (and make no mistake, I’m sure athletes in all sports could tell similar stories), this is a book you will want to read. It pulls aside the veil of smoke and mirrors to let you see the real story of what goes on. This is the story you won’t see on NBC between shots of Apollo Anton Ohno winning gold, it’s not the story you’ll see in the major news media. Because it’s not a story people want to believe is true. But it is.
“We are totally comfortable with Kalyna’s decision to take a year away from skating,” said Short Track Program Director Yves Hamelin. “The post-Olympic year is a good timing to do such a thing, and we know Kalyna was looking forward to taking some time for herself. She progressed very fast in speed skating at a young age, so it’s normal that she needs to take a step back and reflect on where she’s at and where she wants to go from here on.”
The national team from Belgium also has a new national coach, Jorge Botero. I’m really really looking forward to Worlds to meet him and learn as much as possible from him! On Wouter Hebbrecht his blog you can read much more about him, but I’m already convinced that the Belgium team will do great with him as our coach.

Great start lets try & keep this thread on the positive line, of course Colombia will be extremely hard to beat & specially on home soil.
But last time the altitude factor came into play, they failed to win a medal, in the extreme altitude of Bogota, but that was back in 1984 & they have come a very long way since then.
Without the Korean seniors going to worlds because of some home date clashes & of course the focus on the Asian games, you can expect the challenge from Asia to be less of a threat, as not sure of Chinese Taipei approach to Worlds either.
WEll first of all you will need to be extremely fit & technically correct for the longer races, so you are not wasting energy, also what I would call very light on your feet. Bart Swings & Peter Michael will be two foreign skaters who could fit that category. In the ladies De Eugino, Lardarni, Berg & Thum will be opposition, as will my daughter Nicole.
