Don’t count Apolo Ohno out of the 2014 Olympics just yet. The man with eight Olympics medals, the most of any U.S. Winter Olympian in history, hasn’t ruled out a return to the ranks of competitive short track speedskating. “I’ve been so busy since Vancouver and I haven’t been on the ice since,” Ohno said Monday in New York. “Tuesday was my first day on the ice. I’m taking a long break from the sport. I’m looking forward to seeing the London Games, the Sochi Games in some capacity, but I haven’t made a decision about that yet … I think it would take me a minimum of two years to be ready for another Olympics. This is a true break I’ve never had before. I’ve had urges. I wanted to go to Utah and just show up for training.”

LONG TRACK SPEED SKATING
I am left with memories of some of the sweetest, kindest, most intelligent and driven people I have ever been around. Right to Play Rwanda and all that they are doing, all that they strive to do, will forever be a part of my process when thinking about achieving goals. They can write the book or give the class on motivation and selflessness.
STEVEN Bradbury and Julia Gillard have something in common.
They both claimed victory at the expense of other people’s failures, and it’s something Bradbury is still proud of eight years later.
The Australian short-track speed skater and four-time Olympian — who won 1000m gold in the 2002 Winter Olympics after all of his opponents were involved in a last-corner pile-up — was on the Coast to open Dreamworld’s Illuminate Winter Wonderland.
These in-line skating events are some of the most rewarding activities I do, and also some of the hardest on my ego; not at all unlike mothering. So as long as I can find weekend childcare, skate 11 miles and maintain my sense of humor, I’ll be the smart aleck in the baggy shorts cracking jokes and reflecting that the best back stories are often in the back of the pack.
Whenever I skate with Herb I am shocked by the pure power that the man possesses. He has come a long way from the days we both showed up to TISC practices in 2001 and 2002. Back then, I was the one that (at least for marathons) knew how to prepare for and excel in them. Now I can’t even draft the guy. He can take off whenever he wants. It’s amazing.

‘Olympic speedskater Apolo Ohno waves after throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the Seattle Mariners play the Chicago Cubs in a baseball game Wednesday, June 23, 2010, in Seattle. The 28-year-old and the United States’ most decorated Winter Olympian said he still has not decided if he will compete again and that if he does not “I had a great run.”‘ caption from here, photo from AP Photo/Elaine Thompson
Apolo Anton Ohno’s having fun. He’s speaking about short-track speedskating in the past tense. He’s saying he’s “had a great run” in the sport.
That is, if he decides to retire.
America’s most decorated Winter Olympian said Wednesday he still doesn’t know if he will compete again.
They remind me of my own team that prepared me for the last Olympics. I called them my ‘circle of strength’ because they were always there for me: planning, preparing, caring and making sure I had every chance I needed to perform. These people were my husband, my coach, my strength trainer, therapists, physiologist, skate technician, video technician and so many more. Right to Play Rwanda is the ‘circle of strength’ for all of the children here.

Skaters whose career is ice will spend the summer training for World Cup races, then competing in them this fall, winter, and spring, if they are good enough to qualify. Ice skaters (and most other Olympians, in any sport, I expect) don’t just wait for every fourth year to compete; they do it full-time, almost year around. They do it to get the experience of competing against others who will be Olympians, so they’ll know their competition well at the Olympics. They do it to keep their body tuned and their skills sharp; if they get flabby and stale, it’s virtually impossible to catch up to someone who has always stayed the best they can be and is training to get better. (Not that, if they skated inline they’d become flabby in the sense of being couch potatoes, but relatively to someone who’d been skating ice constantly.)

Despite living as an undocumented immigrant in America from South Korea for most of his childhood, Cho still pursued his dream of speed skating, winning a bronze medal at the Vancouver Olympic Games as the youngest member of his team at 18 years old.
